Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Public Health Services Division is part of the integrated Haywood County Health and Human Services Agency which includes the former Haywood County Health Department and the Haywood County Social Services Department. The primary purpose of the Public Health Nursing Section in the Public Health Services Division of the Haywood County Human Services Agency is to promote preventative health care-primary, secondary and tertiary.


Primary Purpose of the Position: The purpose of the Physician Extender [PE] position is to provide preventive/primary care services to patients in a variety of clinical settings with physician supervision and collaboration. The PE will make medical diagnoses and dispense medical treatment under mutually agreed upon patient care protocols and medical guidelines with the supervising physician. These services include but are not restricted to: promotion/maintenance of health, prevention of illness and disability; diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic illness; guidance and counseling for both individuals and families; prescribing, administering, and dispensing therapeutic measures, tests, procedures, and drugs; planning for situations beyond the PE’s expertise; consulting with and referring to other health care providers as appropriate; and evaluation health outcomes. Clinical setting include Child Health, Family Planning, Prenatal Clinic, Adult Health Clinic/BCCCP, STD’s, and Community Health.


This position would occasionally serve at the Employee Wellness Clinic for episodic care and may be used in future Wellness initiatives such as diabetes prevention, weight loss management, blood pressure management, etc.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Thorough knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking, principles and practices of general medicine and disease states as they relate to the area of work; thorough knowledge of health appraisal tools, laboratory tests and findings, materia medica, and therapeutic procedures as relate to the area of work; thorough knowledge and ability to plan a regime of care based on assessment and findings; considerable knowledge of available resources and appropriate referral methods. Skills in performing clinical functions. Skill in assisting with routine surgical procedures. Ability to examine patients and detect abnormalities; ability to record accurately and completely all information necessary to evaluate and plan care and to convey this to the physician; ability to communicate orally; ability to teach and counsel individuals, families and groups in areas of health maintenance, preventive medicine, and care of the sick; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and to gain the confidence of patients and families and work effectively with them; some ability to plan and conduct in-service training programs.


Minimum Education and Experience – Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board and one year of experience as a Physician Extender; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications - Must possess a valid NC Driver’s license and have access to a vehicle. Driving record should not include more than three (3) points on current DMV record.
