“Register for the 35th Annual Haywood County Senior Games”

Haywood County Senior Games is one of 3 original local games that make up the current 53 local games sanctioned by the North Carolina Senior Games.  Participants have the opportunity to compete in a variety of athletic events like shuffleboard, pickleball, table tennis, bowling, swimming and track and field events just to name a few.

For those that may choose to steer clear of athletic events, there’s also Silver Arts, a component of Senior Games that highlights the artist in everyone.  Categories include Visual Arts (photography, painting, woodworking, etc.), Heritage Arts (pottery, quilting, basket weaving, etc.), Literary Arts (poems, short stories, essays, life experiences), and Performing Arts (comedy/drama, vocal, dance, instrumental, line dance). Many folks take advantage of both divisions, competing in athletics as well as Silver Arts.

This yearly activity draws over 100 participants, age 50 or better, from Haywood County and surrounding areas to participate in the month-long events.  Most participants are not super athletes or seasoned artists.  While 1st, 2nd & 3rd place medals are awarded to competitors per 5 year age division, most participants primarily enjoy the fun, fellowship, and of course the food.

Another great aspect of the Haywood County Senior Games is the value that participants receive.  For just $15, seniors can participate in as many events as they choose in either division.  Only a couple of events have an additional fee such as golf and bowling. The fee includes a t-shirt, light lunch at the Opening Ceremony on April 20 and AARP Ice Cream Social on May 4.

Registration is open through April 7 at the Haywood County Recreation & Parks office located at 63 Elmwood Way, Suite B in Waynesville or online at http://torch.ncseniorgames.org.  This year also includes off-site registrations: March 21, 10-12:30pm at the Senior Resource Center in Waynesville; March 23, 12-2pm at Canton Town Hall; March 28, 7-10am at Haywood Regional Fitness Center; March 30, 7-10am at Waynesville Recreation Center.  Events are scheduled throughout the county April 20 – May 11.  Eligibility requirements include an age of 50 or better on December 31, 2017 and must live in Haywood County for 3 consecutive months.

Haywood County Senior Games is coordinated by the Haywood County Recreation & Parks Department and sponsored statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services.  NC Senior Games is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 50 years of age and better.  For more information contact the Haywood County Recreation & Parks office at (828) 452-6789 or visit www.haywoodnc.net.
