Primary Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of the Detention Officer I is to oversee jail inmates within the detention facility.  The Detention Officer is responsible for security, inmate health and welfare, to include: medical, mental health, family problems, feeding, religious needs, legal rights, housekeeping, laundry and hygiene.  The Detention Officer I works according to procedures but decides how and when to perform tasks under general supervision.

Essential Tasks of the Position:

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in the Detention Center.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the Detention Officer I as necessary.

  • Perform two (2) inmate checks per hour on an irregular basis, unless otherwise noted, (i.e. medical, suicide or special observations)
  • Processing inmates into and out of the detention facility
  • Searching inmates and the facility as required
  • Explaining procedures and determining any personal issues
  • Performs security checks to insure inmates and facilities are secure
  • Monitor court appearance schedules and insure inmates are ready; transport inmates as required
  • Makes inmates available for legal consultation with attorneys
  • Performs housekeeping chores such as laundry and cleaning
  • Insures inmates receive meals, mail, medications and medical attention if required
  • Gathers and maintains information to support periodic and special reports documenting detention facility activities and events to include form preparation and log preparation
  • Performs routine office tasks, such as typing, filing, faxing, phoning and copying, transcribing and/or entering or posting data or information

Hours of Work/Benefits:

The hours for this position consist of rotating shifts of 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. but are subject to change.  This is a full time position for Haywood County and all County provided benefits are available to this position.

Required Minimum Training:

Vocational/Educational preparation includes job specific training and education that may be acquired in a school, work, military, institutional or vocational environment.  It does not include the orientation time required of a fully qualified worker to become accustomed to the special conditions of any new job.  Nor does it include the amount of time that a worker spends to learn reasoning, language and mathematical skills, which are often learned in school.

Experience refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry level into the position that would result in a reasonable expectation that the employee can perform the job.  It may be experience that can be gained on the job or experience in a previous job.

This position requires a high school, GED or high school equivalency.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Special Certifications and Licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses required to be employed.

This position requires Detention Officer Certification, CPR Certification and first aid certification to include any and all additional training requirements as requested by the Office.

Additional Requirements:

Applicant must have a clean driving record with no more than a maximum of three points on DMV record.
